Nigerian to emerge next president of UN General Assembly

Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to United Nations Prof. Tijani Muhammad-Bande may become the next President of the United Nations General Assembly, an aide to President Muhammadu Buhari said on Tuesday.

“Nigeria’s current Permanent Representative to the U.N., Prof. Tijani Muhammad-Bande, is expected to assume the next Presidency of the U.N. General Assembly,” Ogunlesi said on Twitter on Tuesday.

“President of UNGA and Minister of Foreign Affairs disclose that Nigeria will be assuming Presidency of U.N. General Assembly when the term of the incumbent expires,” he added.

The current and 77th UNGA President H.E. Maria Espinosa is currently in Nigeria. She met with President Buhari on Tuesday morning and held a press conference alongside the Minister of Foreign Affairs Geoffrey Onyeama at the State House, Abuja.

Espinosa said she is in Nigeria to “acknowledge Nigeria’s important role in the multilateral system and in the United Nations.”

She will also highlight Nigeria’s membership of the Human Rights Council, and leadership of C34 (UN troop-contributing countries), ECOWAS and Lake Chad Basin Commission.
